Profile: Kevin McConkey is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of New South Wales. He holds a BA (Hons), 1976, and a PhD in Psychology, 1980, from the University of Queensland. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program, Harvard Business School, 2004. He is an Honorary Fellow (since 2005) and former President of the Australian Psychological Society (1993-1994), a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (since 1996), and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (since 2002).
Kevin has long-standing experience in corporate governance and senior management roles across tertiary education organisations, including the University of New South Wales (Head, School of Psychology [1993-1999] and President, Academic Board [1999-2004]) and the University of Newcastle (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic [2006-2008] and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Global Relations [2009-2012]). He has undertaken consultancies for public and private tertiary education organisations in Australia and overseas on governance and management, strategic planning, financial management, employee relations, administrative effectiveness and efficiency, and international education.

Profile: As a professional designer who joined the ranks of academia full time in 1994, Professor Newman brings a mix of design and business experiences to higher education and an acute business acumen to the management of projects and academic units.

Professor Newman completed his studies in Industrial Design at the National Art School (NAS) in the early 1970s and has held various design and design management positions in Australia and Europe. Senior design positions with Philips, Email and for six years as Research and Development Manager for Sebel Furniture paralleled his editorial stewardship of the national magazine Design in Australia and various executive roles within the Design Institute of Australia (DIA).

For five years in the late 1980s Professor Newman was the Chief Executive Officer of the public company, Exhibit Resources, which he established, a company involved in design and fabrication of museums and exhibitions. Professor Newman has

held many board directorships and consultancy positions to major companies.

Professor Newman was Head of School of Design Studies, College of Fine Arts (COFA), the University of New South Wales (UNSW) for eight years from 1992 to 2000 and from 2002 for 4 years he was Director & Dean of Sydney College of the Arts, the visual arts Faculty of the University of Sydney. In January 2005 Auckland University through its business incubator, IceHouse, appointed Professor Newman into a parallel role as Entrepreneur in Residence, a residency designed to initiate new collaborations within Auckland University and encouraging outreach to the commercial community of New Zealand.

In September 2006 Professor Newman left the University of Sydney, to join Raffles Education Corp (REC) to become Vice President and later (2008) President of Raffles University System, at REC’s headquarters in Singapore. Professor Newman left REC in 2011 and is currently CEO of Virtu Institute.

Profile: Dr Lee Styger is the Executive MBA Director of the University of Wollongong’s Sydney Business School. Before joining the Sydney Business School, Lee worked with many blue chip organisations in the business development, product development and people development spaces.

Lee is a thought leader and creative thinker. He is a rare individual who has forged a career in both industry and academia. Working in advanced technology and platform development, Lee’s career foundation has been in the new product development, rapid prototyping, niche production and 3D printing disciplines. Lee has worked on programs in industries as diverse as medical devices, automotive, avionics, environmental and education.

Lee has been a member of, and chaired, many prestigious design and industry committees and boards, delivering programs though out the European Union, Asia and the USA. He is regularly called upon to deliver keynote talks and lead innovation groups for businesses.

His experience has resulted in a passionate belief of the imperative that winning organisations must deliver meaningful customer delight through differentiation and value creation, at the heart of which lies good design.

Profile: Simon Schwarz is an Executive Director at Adexum Capital, a private equity fund manager investing growth capital into Australian and NZ based companies. He holds a BSc (Advanced) (Hons I, Medal) from the University of Sydney (1998) a Masters of Applied Finance from Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre (2003) and an MBA (Exec) from the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of New South Wales (2014).

Simon has strong expertise in finance, governance and risk management, as Honorary Fellow (since 2014) and member of the Risk Advisory Group at the Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre where he co-authored the Master’s level Financial Risk Management course and lecturers in Financial Risk Management and Professional Practice;

a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (since 2014) and the Risk Management Association (Australia) (since 2011); a Certified Treasury and Finance Professional with the Finance & Treasury Association (since 2007); and was previously the Head of Credit and Head of Investment Committee with executive responsibility for the Board Australia Risk & Capital Committee at Investec Bank (Australia) Limited.

Simon is currently a member of the Advisory Panel of ASX-listed zipMoney Limited, and was previously the Chief Operating Officer at SocietyOne Australia Pty Limited. Simon is also a member of the Development Committee of the Menzies School of Health Research, a school within Charles Darwin University’s Institute of Advanced Studies.

Jane Mourao

Profile: Jane Mourao is an experienced educational manager with over 20 years in the education industry. Her career spans teaching, administration, marketing and management, with experience in both private and public sector educational institutions.

Jane began her career as an EFL teacher (English as a foreign language) in Australia and overseas. Her interest in the business side of the operation translated into experience outside the classroom in a range of operational areas such as admissions. This led to working in the international marketing arena and eventually becoming Director of Marketing.

The insight of being an educator as well as administrator has served Jane well in being able to see issues from different perspectives and coming up with creative and practical solutions.

Jane’s management experience comes in both the marketing and general management fields and is across four different institutions, private Higher Education Providers and public institutions. Her breadth of experience has resulted in a finely-honed approach to educational management and organisational design that provides optimal outcomes for all stakeholders. Jane is currently working in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney as Faculty Operations Manager, having also completed a time as General Manager.
