CHC34015 Certificate III in Active Volunteering

Volunteering is a rewarding and stimulating engagement with community or even professional career that connects you to others. It offers the unique opportunity to utilise your existing skills and knowledge in an industry of interest, while helping and supporting others in need. Volunteering work is an excellent way to learn new skills, gain exposure to new, contribute to your community or potentially create a pathway into full time employment.

This qualification is aimed at the more experienced volunteer that requires the skills and knowledge to lead others. In today’s volunteering environment, volunteer leaders need to be equipped with to deal with various incidents, situations and people, as well as leading and directing other volunteers through these encounters.

Virtu Institute has designed this qualification in consultation with Volunteering Services Australia. At the completion of this course you will possess the skills and knowledge required to be an experienced volunteer worker successfully leading volunteer teams and managing the output of others within a project or team.

There are a number of different volunteering roles available depending on your areas of interest, experience and skills. These opportunities range from community welfare, special needs assistance, youth work, adult education and fund raising, just to name a few.

Pathways into the qualification
The qualification CHC34015 Certificate III in Active Volunteering is designed for those wishing to work in the role of an experienced volunteer leading other volunteering teams. It is recommended that people entering this qualification have completed CHC24015 Certificate II in Active Volunteering or possess a skills set that demonstrates an ability to lead others and be applied to the volunteering area of interest.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the qualification applicants must:
• Be over the age of 18
• Have an appropriate level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills to complete the course

Pathways from the qualification
Students with CHC34015 Certificate III in Active Volunteering are able to work as an experienced volunteer, under the direction of others with either direct or indirect supervision to lead other volunteer workers. The theoretical and practical content in this qualification supports learning for entry into further vocational training at Certificate or Diploma level.

Course Duration
There are ten (10) units for the qualification; 6 core units and 4 elective units. The duration of the course depends on a student’s pre-existing qualifications and experience, a student’s full time or part time status and study commitment, and finally the pace at which the student studies.

Our courses can be studied full-time or part time with the student deciding on their own study pace by enrolling in either one or two subjects per Term. Normal duration is twelve (12) months full-time or two (2) year part-time. To achieve this qualification, students must complete at least twenty (20) hours of volunteer work.

It is expected that students will allow 10 hours (part time) to 20 hours (full time) per week for their classes, home and work study. Virtu academic year is divided into 8 terms of study per year, with enrolments in January, February, April, May, July, August, October and November of each year.

Credit Transfer and RPL
Virtu Institute offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where a student’s existing skills and knowledge are matched against the requirements of the qualification. Additional information on our Credit Transfer and RPL process is available from the Virtu website.

Course Fees
Virtu Institute will charge students AUD$50 per credit point for each subject studied and payment is by credit card each term. As an example a 10 Credit Point subject will cost AUD$500. The total cost of the Certificate II is AUD$2,700 including the Volunteering Green Card taken in assessment mode.

Unsuccessful applicants will be advised of the reasons why they have not been offered a place in the course, their right to appeal the decision, and information on how to access the appeals process.

VOLUNTEERING GREEN CARD

The Volunteering Green Card and Certification is comprised of three online modules: Getting Ready to Volunteer, Let’s Get Volunteering, and Being a Great Volunteer. At the completion of these modules volunteers will then be placed in a suitable volunteer role to complete 20 hours at which time assessment will take place.

This unit provides an introduction to the fundamental of effective workplace communication with a focus on interpersonal communication. The subject explores key communication strategies often used in the Community Services Sector and volunteering sectors, such as Person Centered approaches, Motivational Interviewing and conflict resolution. Facilitation of meetings is also discussed and fundamentals of effective presentations are also discussed.

This subject provides the basic skills and knowledge that underpins working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Australian workplaces are comprised of diverse people from a range of backgrounds, holding many different beliefs.

The content will provide learners with the skills to reflect on their own beliefs as well as appreciate the beliefs of others. Learners will learn some of the fundamental skills of communicating with people from diverse backgrounds through gaining a deeper knowledge of diversity and its many forms.

This subject provides an introduction to the legislative and ethical framework for work within the Community Services sector. Students will learn come of the key areas of legislation impacting on work in the sector as well as common ethical problems. By the end of the subject students will be able to identify poetical legal and ethical breaches and take appropriate action. In addition, students will be expected to make suggestions for improving legislative compliance and ethical behaviour in their organisations.

This subject focuses on the key aspects of safe work practices. The learner will be exposed to the key rights and responsibilities of both employers and workers. The subject makes the distinction between organisations engaging volunteers only and those engaging in a mix of paid and volunteer workers. Learners will explore the common workplace hazards, hazard identification and risk assessment. Learners will be required to demonstrate participation in safe work practices in a workplace.

This subject provides an introduction to basic elements of initial service provision. The subject focuses on the initial or first contact with a service user or potential service user. The subject focuses on the greeting and explanation of services to a service user and the documentation that would need to be provided and completed. Learners will learn about different approaches to addressing specific needs of service users including those that present in an aggressive and/or distressed manner. Communicating with people with a cognitive impairment will also be addressed.

Students are required to implement these skills on a placement with a volunteer organisation where they will lead a team of volunteers.

This subject describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. Students will learn how to respond to an emergency situation, apply appropriate first aid procedures, communicate details of the incident and reflect on the incident to evaluate personal performance.
