CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

This nationally recognised qualification consists of twenty eight (28) units of competency comprising of twenty three (23) core units and five (5) elective units, which Virtu has selected as being most appropriate to their particular course philosophy. Virtu has developed the program into 12 subjects that meet the requirements of the qualification, and industry.

The course duration depends on:

  • A students pre existing qualifications and experience
  • a students full time or part time status and study commitment),
  • Pace at which the student applies themselves

All training and assessment being undertaken will involve a combination of theory sessions, simulated workplace sessions and practical childcare centre placements. Assessment is conducted continuously during your training and takes the form of written (or verbal) theory questions, written assignments, observation of your skills by our trainers and by the staff in the childcare centre.

The course is completed at the students own pace, there is flexibility for the course to be completed in a shorter or longer timeframe, however the intent is for it to ideally take 18 months to complete. The Virtu academic year is divided into 4 terms of study per year. Within a term the participant can study between 2 and 4 subjects.

Assessments can be competed at the student’s own pace, however it is expected that the student will have 10 to 20 hours per week of experience that is relevant to the training program, this may include childcare related activities, assessments or learning processes within the childcare centre.

Students can submit their assessments at any time and are supported by our learning management system and face to face meetings with their supervisors as required. Our training program is detailed below with the intended order of delivery. Units may have pre-requisites, thus the order of assessment is critical to the successful delivery of this qualification.

This study and practice is more than simply spending time doing a job, it is about mastery of the role, about understanding the principles behind completing a task, it is about being the best you can be in the role, as such some particular units of competency have a minimum duration for which they must be undertaken and some have Specific Hours (see Subjects) which must be undertaken to complete the qualification.

Pathways into the qualification
To be eligible to enrol in this course students must be, employed or have substantial access to a suitable child care facility, and have the permission and co-operation of your employer or childcare centre supervisor. While other options exist, the normal method of learning and assessment utilises the resources of the workplace, thus the co-operation of your employer is vital. To be eligible to undertake this qualification, applicants must:

  • Be employed in or have substantive access to a Childcare facility, either, long day care, Family Day Care, or other similar role or facility
  • Have a willing and supportive employer who can ensure that staff undertaking this course have access to the required resources for completion of this course such as:
    • Parents
    • Children of a variety of ages from new born to 5 years of age
    • Confidential Child development records
    • Activity programming
  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have completed a relevant state based Working With Children’s Check before commencement of any child contact sessions.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student’s existing skills and knowledge are matched against the requirements of the qualification. RPL applications cost $250 per subject.

Pathways from the qualification
People who attain this qualification typically are:

  • Able to work with responsibility for supervision of other staff and volunteers
  • Able in most states to operate as the director or at service manager level for children’s service centre-based care.

This qualification will equip you to work with children from 0-5 years of age. Typically graduates will have learnt to provide for the care and education of children and babies in their care under the guidance of a supervisor. This learning process with equip people with the skills and knowledge to:

  • manage services
  • plan programs
  • supervise staff
  • communicate effectively with families
  • monitor the well-being of children
  • work in council and early childhood organisations
  • administer occupational health and safety requirements.

Course Duration
Diploma and Advanced Diploma course duration depends on; a students pre existing qualifications and experience, a students full time or part time status and study commitment and finally the pace at which the student studies. Our Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas can be studied full-time or part time with the student deciding on their own study pace by enrolling in either one or two subjects per Term. Normal duration is one and a half years full-time; three years part-time.

It is expected that the student will allow 10 hours (part time) to 20 hours (full time) per week for their classes and home and work study. Virtu academic year is divided into 4 terms of study per year, with enrolments in January, April, July and October of each year.

Additional Entry requirements for VET Student Loan Students
For students to be eligible to access VET Students Loans they are required to be an Australian citizen; or hold a permanent humanitarian visa and usually reside in Australia; or be a qualifying New Zealand citizen.

Additionally you will be required to provide us with:
– a certified copy of a certificate for a qualification at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 4 (or above) that was delivered in English, or
– a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education awarded by an agency or authority of an Australian State or Territory for your completion of year 12 of school, or
– a certificate of competency at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy using an approved assessment tool arranged by Virtu.
