MST60116 Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising

The qualification MST60116 Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising is designed to be an advanced level qualification in technical, management and design skills within fashion enterprises. The course is designed for those working in or wishing to work as a fashion designer. It is intended for those who already hold a LMT50307 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology or another similar equivalent qualification, or for those who are already working at a middle level in the industry and have accumulated significant equivalent knowledge and skills in Fashion Design and/or Fashion Marketing.
This Advanced Diploma course covers the development of complete garment design and manufacture fashion design schemes and ranges, working with either a self developed or client brief and within project parameters. It also includes specialist design areas such as textile design, advanced pattern development and management of fashion design systems.
This qualification is typically used to develop a breadth, depth and complexity of skills and knowledge covering collections of garments and aesthetic presentations to meet the purpose, efficiency and comfort of the garment collection and encourages the principles of environmental sustainability. It covers a detailed understanding of the application and effect of colour and pattern in fabrics and the application of historic fashion styles and their relationship to design periods and historic uses of fashion.

Our course reflects real industry needs and prepares our graduates to be:
• self employed as a fashion designer or fashion stylist,
• in-house fashion designer, product manager or fashion retailer.

This fashion designer’s work involves the self-directed application of knowledge and skills, with substantial depth in some areas where judgement is required in planning and selecting appropriate equipment, materials and techniques for yourself and others.

Fashion designers work in many different commercial and community contexts across the fashion manufacture and retail industries. The course will prepare you to working in a senior, support or generalist role and your work may include or have links to areas such as fashion stylist, brand manager, colour consultant or retail buyer and you may work as an in-house fashion designer or as a consultant in fashion departments of retail stores.

Pathways into the Qualification/Entry Requirements:
There are no specific academic entry requirements for this course however it should be noted that the LMT50307 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology is embedded in this Advanced Diploma qualification and therefore credit will be given to those who have completed the LMT50307 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology or to those who have achieved an equivalent qualification or who have equivalent industry experience.

This will be done through Virtu’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Normally Virtu would consider two years full time working in fashion design or similar or related field as being suitable experience, however applicants who consider that they have a suitable range of experiences can discuss this with the Registrar during their application interview.
To ensure that people entering this qualification have the necessary initial skills and knowledge to complete the course successfully they must be able to provide evidence of their ability to:
• produce examples of fashion design work that respond effectively to different design challenges
• engage with the design process by developing design solutions through research, reflection and the generation and refinement of ideas
• show examples of computer skills using design industry software, which may include 2D and 3D drafting and rendering programs
• apply knowledge of fashion design trends and technologies.
These skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study, and will need to communicated to us via a portfolio uploaded as part of your online enrolment application.

Pathways from the Qualification
Further education and training pathways from this qualification may include relevant similar discipline higher education programs, management qualifications or relevant manufacturing qualifications.

Course Duration
The MST60116 Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising can be studied full-time or part time with the student deciding on their own study pace by enrolling in either one or two subjects per Term. Normal duration is one year full-time; two years part-time.

In the competitive field of fashion design some designers opt to be specialists in one
niche area, offering an enhanced and extended product. Fashion Design Projects will cover three different design led projects. Researching and investigating two niche markets, sustainable design and human factors and ergonomics. Completing the course with the students own choice of design led project.

Sustainable design will focus on organic materials and production processes used in fashion design. Where students will investigate sustainable methods and fabrics to design a range.

VDIS10047 Fashion Marketing

This subject will develop a marketing plan and sales strategy for one of the Fashion Design Projects the students have completed which best represents their own design philosophy and customer profile. They will investigate strategic directions, analyse their product, customer and sales methods. It requires the application of skills associated with communication to analyse goals and trends, gather and analyse data and present, report and document information. They will design and conduct primary research in a professional manner and develop analytical, and necessary descriptive and statistical skills to interpret the collected data.

VDIS10048 Fashion Design Collection 2 (over Terms 2 & 3)

Students will utilize all previous knowledge to develop their own commercially viable collection in totality and present the collection by organizing and hosting an event to showcase their label. This subject requires extensive skill and knowledge in fashion design development, patternmaking and construction techniques, for the purpose of achieving specific effects such as manipulating fabric to give a garment a more unique, individual appearance. This subject covers the skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate all services required to plan, produce and deliver a live production event.

The purpose of this subject is to provide a framework for practical industry/professional experience assisting students to attain competencies while experiencing first hand the excitement, practicalities and challenges of design practice in the workplace.
