Ramona Solomon







Title: Course Coordinator, Interior Design/Lecturer
Qualification: BBus (UTS), Dip Com Arts, Adv Dip Int Des (Virtu), Cert IV TAE

Profile: Originally a Sydney-Sider, Ramona graduated with a Bachelor of Business from the University of Technology, Sydney in 2003. Following a six-year career in the marketing industry employed in various roles, she moved to Melbourne in 2009.

Ramona’s professional design career began in Melbourne where she received her Diploma in Commercial Arts (Interior Decoration & Design) from the Commercial Arts Training College (CATC) being awarded The Square Peg Award, which recognises tenacity and drive – the constant search for the right solution. This award is given to students who tirelessly look for the big idea, the most creative outcome.

Ramona is a qualified and practicing Interior Designer, currently working as the Lead Interior Designer at 8 Spaces Architects as well as owning her own Interior’s business, working with several residential clients. Her many skills include space planning, developing working drawings & documentation, 3D CAD visualisation and conceptual design.

For over a year, Ramona has lectured several subjects in Interior Design, with a focus on Residential Design, and is passionate about educating students in the fundamentals of the design process, with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design.

Robyn McDonald







Title: Lecturer, Interior Design
Qualification: B Ed, Art & Design (Melb), Dip ID (RMIT), Cert IV TAE

Profile: As an Interior Designer, (Dip ID, RMIT, 2005), I have been involved in both residential and retail projects in urban and regional Victoria and Tasmania.
Prior to obtaining industry qualifications, I received a heritage design award for the development of a Californian Bungalow in 1995, resulting from architectural and construction knowledge derived from first-hand building and project management experience.

Establishment of a retail design and decoration business for 5 years (1999-2003), kept me in touch with changing trends and emerging design companies.

It also broadened my experience of providing customer service in an alternative context.

As an educator, (B Ed, Art & Design, Melbourne University, 1983), I have most recently been lecturing in Interiors at CATC Design School, Melbourne and on-line.
Torn between my passions for teaching and interiors, I continue to work in both fields delivering current industry skills and awareness, to students in stimulating, challenging environments.

Title: Lecturer, Interior Design
Qualification: Adv IDD, Cert IV AWT

Profile: Trained at Unitec Auckland in the early 1980’s before Working on numerous commercial projects with White & White for NZI Corporation throughout New Zealand as well as contract position for visualisation for Countdown supermarkets expansion into the major North Island centres. Two years with AATI Contracts part of the Al Tayer Group based in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Working on private Palaces, Villas and retail outlets.

Relocated to Sydney in the 1990’s working for Servcorp on Australian based commercial premises as well as offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Paris. Also completed private commissions throughout Sydney.

While in Asia started to import decorative product out Shanghai and Hong Kong that were wholesaled throughout Australia, New Zealand, Bali and Paris.

Relocated to the Queensland’s Gold Coast in 2000 after a short period teaching for KVB Institute at Bond University. Then eight years with CATC design School as a senior lecturer while simultaneously completing private commissions in the SE Queensland region. Now teaching Diploma students at the Academy of Design, Robina.

Professor Ron Newman






Title: Chief Executive Officer / Lecturer
ASTC Ind Des, GDipHEd, FIA, 

Profile: As a professional designer who joined the ranks of academia full time in 1994, Professor Newman brings a mix of design and business experiences to higher education and an acute business acumen to the management of projects and academic units.

Professor Newman completed his studies in Industrial Design at the National Art School (NAS) in the early 1970s and has held various design and design management positions in Australia and Europe. Senior design positions with Philips, Email and for six years as Research and Development Manager for Sebel Furniture paralleled his editorial stewardship of the national magazine Design in Australia and various executive roles within the Design Institute of Australia (DIA).

For five years in the late 1980s Professor Newman was the Chief Executive Officer of the public company, Exhibit Resources, which he established, a company involved in design and fabrication of museums and exhibitions. Professor Newman has

held many board directorships and consultancy positions to major companies.

Professor Newman was Head of School of Design Studies, College of Fine Arts (COFA), the University of New South Wales (UNSW) for eight years from 1992 to 2000 and from 2002 for 4 years he was Director & Dean of Sydney College of the Arts, the visual arts Faculty of the University of Sydney. In January 2005 Auckland University through its business incubator, IceHouse, appointed Professor Newman into a parallel role as Entrepreneur in Residence, a residency designed to initiate new collaborations within Auckland University and encouraging outreach to the commercial community of New Zealand.

In September 2006 Professor Newman left the University of Sydney, to join Raffles Education Corp (REC) to become Vice President and later (2008) President of Raffles University System, at REC’s headquarters in Singapore. Professor Newman left REC in 2011 and is currently CEO of Virtu Institute.
